Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Proper diagnosis and treatment of any co-occurring mental health disorder(s) is key when evaluating those suffering with addiction. In many cases, addiction is fueled by either an under treated or undiagnosed mental health problem such as Anxiety, Social Phobia, Depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Bipolar Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, etc…When this is the case, failing to identify and/or treat the underlying problem can make it very difficult to stabilize the addiction and visa versa.
Many treatment programs pay little attention to the issue of diagnosing and treating co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Dr Bienenfeld evaluates every client, and when appropriate, manages their psychiatric care with both therapy and psychopharmacology. In addition, when appropriate, we provide cutting edge modalities including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Neurofeedback, and Ketamine infusions to address these issues.

Instead of drawing a hard line between psychiatric health and addiction, these areas are treated as part of a continuum. The Recovery Spot offers services that are personalized for clients with a Dual Diagnosis.

Dual Diagnosis treatment is a relatively new innovation in the field of addiction recovery. Until the 1990s, people who were experiencing symptoms of a mental health disorder — anxiety attacks, depressive episodes, delusional behavior or mood swings — were treated separately from those who sought help for drug or alcohol abuse.

When these conditions overlapped, clients were often denied treatment for a mental illness until they got clean and sober. Unfortunately, because substance abuse is often driven by an underlying psychiatric disorder, this meant that many people with a Dual Diagnosis of addiction and a mental disorder never got the help they needed.

Effective treatment for a Dual Diagnosis involves considering both your addiction and your mental illness as you go through the recovery process.
